If you send an iMessage to multiple people and everyone uses an Apple device with iMessage turned on, it becomes a group iMessage: every reply goes to the whole group, so all recipients see each other’s responses. If even one person isn’t on iMessage, your iPhone sends it as a green-bubble group MMS, SMS, or RCS message instead, and who sees replies depends on that type.
Below is exactly what each group type means for privacy, plus how to send the same text to several people without creating a group.
Quick Answer: Who Sees Replies When You iMessage Multiple People?
| Group type | Bubble color | When it happens | Do recipients see each other’s replies? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group iMessage | Blue | Every recipient uses iMessage | Yes, everyone sees every reply |
| Group MMS | Green | At least one non-iMessage user and MMS Messaging is on | Yes, everyone sees every reply |
| Group RCS | Green | iOS 18 or later, carrier supports RCS, RCS Messaging on | It works as a shared group chat |
| Group SMS | Green | MMS isn’t available or is turned off | No, each reply comes back to you as a separate text |
The Messages app picks the type automatically, according to Apple’s group messaging support page. You don’t choose it per message.
How a Group iMessage to Multiple People Works

When all recipients are on iMessage, Messages creates one shared thread in blue bubbles. It’s sent through Apple rather than your carrier and is end-to-end encrypted.
In a group iMessage, everyone can:
- See every reply from every member
- See tapbacks (reactions), inline replies, and message effects
- Send photos, videos, and audio messages
- Mention someone by typing @ and their name
- Name the group, share location, and mute notifications
Bottom line: treat a group iMessage like a group chat, not like BCC email. Anything anyone replies is visible to the whole group.
What Happens if One Person Doesn’t Have iMessage
If a single recipient uses Android or has iMessage turned off, the whole conversation goes green and is sent through your carrier.
- Group MMS: used when MMS Messaging is on (Settings > Apps > Messages, or Settings > Messages on older iOS). Everyone sees all replies and can send photos and videos.
- Group RCS: on iOS 18 or later with a supported carrier, you get high-resolution media, typing indicators, and read receipts, still in green bubbles.
- Group SMS: text only. Each reply is sent as an individual text, so recipients don’t see each other’s answers.
Since iOS 17, iMessage users inside a group MMS can still use tapbacks, editing, and inline replies, per Apple.
Blue vs. Green Bubbles in Group Texts
| Feature | Group iMessage (blue) | Group MMS / SMS / RCS (green) |
|---|---|---|
| Sent via | Apple | Your carrier |
| End-to-end encrypted | Yes | MMS and SMS: no. RCS: depends on carrier and iOS version |
| Add or remove people later | Yes (with limits) | No, start a new group |
| Name the group | Yes | No |
| Leave the conversation | Yes (groups of 4+ people) | No, mute or block instead |
How to Start a Group iMessage on iPhone
- Open Messages and tap the Compose button.
- Type names or numbers in the To field, or tap the Add button to pick contacts.
- Type your message and tap Send.
Check the color: if the names in the To field and the Send button are blue, it will go as iMessage. If any turn green, that person will receive SMS/MMS/RCS and the whole group goes green.
How to Add, Remove, Mute, or Leave a Group
All of these start by opening the conversation and tapping the group icons at the top of the thread.
- Add someone: tap Add, enter the contact, then Done. Per Apple, the new person must use an Apple device and the group must already have three or more people. You can’t turn a one-on-one chat into a group this way.
- Remove someone: touch and hold their name, then tap Remove from Group. The group needs four or more people, all on Apple devices.
- Mute: turn on Hide Alerts. You stay in the chat but stop getting notifications. This works in group iMessage and group MMS.
- Leave: scroll down and tap Leave This Conversation. It’s only offered in group iMessages large enough to continue without you; otherwise, mute it.
- Rename: tap Change Name and Photo (group iMessage only).
Spam group MMS on iOS 17 or later: tap the group name at the top, then Delete and Block this Conversation.
Send the Same iMessage to Multiple People Without a Group
If you don’t want recipients to see each other or each other’s replies, don’t put them all in one To field. Options:
- Send individually: copy your text, then paste it into separate one-on-one conversations.
- Use Shortcuts: build a shortcut with a Repeat with Each action over a list of contacts and a Send Message action inside it. Each person gets their own private thread.
- Turn off MMS Messaging (not recommended for most people): green-bubble groups then go out as group SMS, where replies stay private. This also turns off picture messaging to non-iPhone users and doesn’t affect iMessage groups.

Troubleshooting Group iMessages
- One person gets messages as green texts: they’ve turned off iMessage, switched to Android, or their number isn’t registered with iMessage. Ask them to check Settings > Apps > Messages.
- Group split into several threads: this usually happens when a member’s phone number or Apple Account email changes. Start a fresh group with the correct addresses.
- Can’t send to Android users in a group: make sure MMS Messaging is on. If you can’t find the setting, ask your carrier whether your plan supports group MMS.

FAQ
If I send an iMessage to multiple people, can they see each other’s replies?
Yes. If everyone uses iMessage, it becomes a group iMessage and every reply is visible to the whole group. The same is true of group MMS. Only group SMS keeps replies private.
Can recipients see who else I sent the message to?
Yes. In any group iMessage, MMS, or RCS thread, every member’s name or number is shown at the top of the conversation. To hide recipients, send separate one-on-one messages.
Why did my group iMessage turn green?
At least one recipient isn’t using iMessage, so your iPhone sent it as group MMS, SMS, or RCS through your carrier instead.
Can I send the same iMessage to several people without creating a group chat?
Yes. Paste the text into separate conversations, or use a Shortcuts automation that repeats a Send Message action for each contact.
Can I leave a group text on iPhone?
You can leave a group iMessage with Leave This Conversation when the group is large enough. You can’t leave a group MMS or SMS, but you can turn on Hide Alerts or, on iOS 17 or later, delete and block the conversation.
Is a group iMessage encrypted?
Yes. According to Apple, group iMessages are sent through Apple and protected by end-to-end encryption. Group MMS and SMS go through your carrier and aren’t end-to-end encrypted.
