The newest model still sold under the Fire name is the Fire HD 8 (2024); the newest Fire HD 10 is the 13th-gen model from 2023.

- Kindle Fire (2011–2014): the original name. Amazon dropped “Kindle” from its tablets in 2014.
- Fire tablets (2014–2026): Fire 7, Fire HD 8, Fire HD 10 and Fire Max 11, all running Amazon’s Fire OS.
- Alexa Tablets (from October 2026): run Android with Google Play Store access and Alexa+ built in.

Amazon told reporters it has stopped making new Fire tablets but will keep supporting existing ones. Remaining stock may still be on sale for a while.
What Changed With the Alexa Tablets
- Google Play Store: the biggest change. Fire tablets were limited to the Amazon Appstore.
- Alexa+ built in: a persistent on-screen widget that can answer questions about what is on screen. Amazon says you can set Google Gemini as the default assistant instead.
- Kindle Mode: opens with the Kindle app, silences notifications and mutes colors for reading.
- Better hardware: aluminum bodies, more RAM and higher-resolution screens.
- Higher prices: the cheapest Alexa Tablet costs well over what the Fire HD 8 used to.

- Tightest budget, Amazon content only: a discounted Fire HD 8 or Fire HD 10. See whether the Fire HD 10 is worth buying.
- Need Google apps or want years of updates: Alexa Tablet 8 or 11.

Already Own a Fire Tablet?
You do not need to replace it right away. Amazon’s policy is at least four years of security updates after a model was last sold new on its websites.
